Missouri State University has recently adopted a policy banning the recreational and unauthorized use of the unmanned aircraft systems known as drones.
The Springfield News-Leader reports that the policy was approved Oct. 3 by university president Clif Smart.
University attorney Jeff Mitchell says the policy was shaped by Federal Aviation Administration guidance and was designed to ensure the safety and privacy of people on the university’s Springfield, Mountain Grove and West Plains campuses.
Mitchell says anyone caught violating the policy will be subject to discipline under university policies, as well as penalties under state and federal law.
Faculty and students can seek permission to use drones.
