Courtesy of Shure IncorporatedPaul McCartney and The Who have partnered with the Shure microphone company for a special charity auction in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Shure’s popular SM58 mics. Shure has created commemorative limited-edition SM58 microphones featuring custom-painted McCartney- and Who-themed designs that will be sold via eBay.

Three hundred microphones of each design will go up for bid, with 10 of each signed, respectively, by Sir Paul and by The Who’s Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend.

The McCartney-themed mics feature a photo of the former Beatle taken by his daughter Mary that appeared on his 2012 album Kisses on the Bottom. The mics will go up for bid on Wednesday, March 1, and will benefit the McCartney family’s Meat Free Monday charity.

The Who-themed mics boast an original design by Richard Evans, who has worked on the band’s album covers and artwork for decades. The auction, whose start date hasn’t been announced yet, will benefit the Teen Cancer America charity, which Daltrey and Townshend launched in 2012.

“The Shure SM58 has carried my voice to millions around the world over many years, and it still carries millions of voices to audiences every day,” says McCartney in a statement. “I am pleased to join with Shure in offering this special edition 50th Anniversary SM58 in support of a charity that is close to the heart of my family.”

Adds Daltrey, “Shure and the SM58 have played a big part in my career, and we have joined forces on many charitable activities in support of teen cancer treatment thus far. It feels natural that we are working together on this auction in commemoration of this important milestone.”
