Allen Kee / ESPN Images(NEW YORK) — Major League Baseball announced its winners for the Cy Young Award Wednesday night. Red Sox starter Rick Porcello won in the American League, while Nationals starter Max Scherzer won in the National League.
Porcello led baseball with 22 wins, but received just eight of the 30 first-place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Detroit Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander, who went 16-8 on the season with a 2.40 ERA, got 14 first-place votes, marking the first time an AL Cy Young winner didn’t get the most first-place votes.
Porcello won 137-132, which is the second-closest vote since 1970. The closest also involved Verlander, who lost by four points to David Price back in 2012. Cleveland Indians ace Corey Kluber came in third.
For Scherzer it was much more clear cut, as he received 25 first-place votes, defeating Chicago Cub teammates Jon Lester and Kyle Hendricks.
Scherzer became the sixth pitcher to earn the Cy Young in both leagues, joining Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Gaylord Perry and Roy Halladay. Scherzer won with the Tigers in the AL in 2013.
