Credit: Rick DiamondStyx has enjoyed a long relationship with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the veteran rockers will continue that partnership this Sunday, October 2, when they perform the national anthem prior at the NFL team’s home game versus the Kansas City Chiefs. The game, which will take place at Pittsburgh’s Heinz Field, will be televised live on NBC’s Sunday Night Football starting at 8:30 p.m. ET.

In addition, Styx has dedicated its concert at Benedum Theatre in Pittsburgh this Saturday to retired Steelers linebacker Kevin Greene, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last month. Greene, who plans to attend the Styx show, will be presented with his Hall of Fame ring during a halftime ceremony at the Steelers game on Sunday.

Styx’s association with the Steelers dates back more than a decade, when the team adopted the band’s classic tune “Renegade” as its unofficial theme song. Since then, the group has played the national anthem numerous time at Steelers games.

Founding Styx guitarist James “JY” Young recalls that he and his band mates first met Greene in 2001 when the group performed at the Super Bowl.

“We were impressed with Kevin’s football career as well as the fact that he is a huge STYX fan from Southern Illinois,” says Young. “We’re profoundly honored to be a part of the Pittsburgh tradition of celebrating their Hall of Fame inductees, especially this time as Kevin is being inducted. He’s a great guy, friend and football player.”

Styx has about 20 dates left on its 2016 tour itinerary and, as previously reported, the band will team up with ex-Eagles guitarist Don Felder this January for a five-date Las Vegas engagement at the Venetian hotel and casino.
