Credit: Danny ClinchPrior to the U.S. presidential election, Bruce Springsteen was outspoken in his criticism of Donald Trump. Now that Trump is President-elect and the Boss is preparing a new studio album, might the Donald be the subject of any new tunes?
“I haven’t written about it,” Springsteen tells Marc Maron in the latest episode of the comic’s WTF podcast. “It takes a while to digest all those things. I don’t know if I will, ’cause I don’t go, ‘Okay, I need a Trump album. That’s what’s got to come next.'”
Bruce explains that Trump could eventually be the inspiration for future songs, noting, “I can make a record based on what I can write about at a given moment. Sometimes it ends up being topical. Sometimes it doesn’t.”
He adds that, with regard to the upcoming album, “we’ve got a good arsenal of material right now, that we can go out and sort of put in service.”
As for his reaction to Trump’s election, Springsteen tells Maron, “I’ve felt disgust before, but never the kind of fear that you feel now. It’s as simple as the fear of ‘is someone simply competent enough to do this particular job?’ Forget about where they are ideologically.”
Bruce also says he worries that Trump’s message and comments seems to appeal to various apparently bigoted groups.
“When you let that genie out of the bottle — bigotry, racism, intolerance — they don’t go back in the bottle that easily if they go back in at all,” notes Springsteen. “My fears are that those things find a place in ordinary, civil society and the country changes in a way that is unrecognizable, and we become estranged.”
