Later this month, volunteers across the country will come together for Wreaths Across American, an annual holiday event honoring military veterans buried in more than 2,400 cemeteries.Nationally, the focus will be on Arlington National Cemetery, which was in the spotlight in mid-November, when it was announced this year’s event had been canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. However, the Secretary of the Army overruled the decision to cancel the event. With the decision, the event at Arlington has been amended to extend over a week and allows the public to participate only via social media and virtually. During the multi-day event, approximately 267,000 wreaths will be placed on graves at Arlington National Cemetery.Locally, the event’s director in Mountain Home, Heather Duggins, says the ceremony at noon on Dec. 19 remains unchanged.

While the deadline to make contributions to this year’s event has passed, Duggins says people generally continue to donate up through the holidays. From this point, funds received this year will be applied to Wreaths Across American in 2021.

Duggins says 2020 marks the third year for Wreaths Across America in Mountain Home. She says the event continues to grow.
