Birds are to blame for a power outage that knocked out electricity to thousands of people in the North Little Rock area.

North Little Rock Electric spokeswoman Jill Ponder says about 11,000 customers lost electricity late Sunday morning. She tells the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that electricity was restored by Sunday night.

More than 1,000 Entergy Arkansas customers also lost power. Spokeswoman Julie Munsell says multiple birds caused “significant” damage within an electrical substation, which caused the outage.

Munsell says officials don’t know exactly how the birds disrupted power, but says it’s common in the spring and summer for animals to interfere with electrical equipment.
