I have been in the
Mtn. Home School system for 27 years, and I have always known that we have the
greatest fans and supporters in the state. Holding the Fastpitch 6A State
Championship Challenge Game to raise money for state championship rings just
reinforced that fact. When we finished counting, the total event raised
$3,020.00! This amount includes admission to the event, entry fees, special
events (paying for a single, double, triple, or home run), the No-Show Team
(paying not to play), home run derby (37 entrants), and generous donations.
My intent was to
mention individuals and businesses that helped make this event such a success,
but knowing all of you as I do, you would much prefer I use this space to talk
about our athletes and not you. For that, we are very, very appreciative of
your support.
This was a banner
year for Mtn. Home athletics. We had four state championships, two state
runners-ups, and many teams that made it to the final four. We also had
individual state champions in tennis, golf, cross country, and wrestling. We
had several athletes who signed National Letters of Intent and received
scholarships so that they could further their education through playing their
sport.
In addition to
athletic scholarships, we had many athletes who received academic scholarships.
Of the 52 seniors who were honor graduates (3.5 gpa or above), 50% of these
participated in a sport. Perhaps the statistic that we are most proud of is
that 100% of our senior athletes graduated from high school. Of this number, a
huge majority (we do not have a final count, but we believe it is over 95%), are
set to attend some type of post-high school education. We strive very hard,
starting in 7th grade, to make academics our top priority. I believe
if you ask any athlete the question, “Who stays after you about your grades more
than anyone except your parents?”, they would quickly say, “My coach”.
This will be my
last “From the AD” article until school resumes in August. In closing, please
accept my heart-felt thanks to ALL of you who help support our athletic program
throughout the year. We do our utmost to take young people who are interested,
provide them an opportunity to participate in a sport that interests them, help
them learn to be part of a team, assist them on how to handle winning and
losing, stress continued education, encourage them to respect their elders, and
mold them into productive, successful citizens. We can only continue this
endeavor with YOUR help. Thank you again, and we hope you have a wonderful
summer.
