  • Arkansas ranks #1 in the United States for senior citizens suffering from hunger and food insecurity.

  • In the Twin Lakes Area, nearly 8,000 senior citizens, many who are raising grandchildren, deal with food insecurity.

  • Pride often keeps senior citizens from using programs like food stamps.

  • In Arkansas it is estimated less than half of those seniors eligible for food stamps use them.

  • Nearly 40 percent of the nearly 8,000 senior citizens in the Twin Lakes Area say they have had to choose between paying for food or medical care.

  • Food insecurity is associated with many negative health effects, especially among senior citizens.

  • Factors contributing to food insecurity among seniors are financial hardship, lack of transportation, mobility limitations and living in areas with few food stores.
