The Arkansas surgeon general, Dr. Joe Thompson, recently visited Baxter Regional Medical Center and provided background information and updates on the Arkansas Center for Health Improvement and Healthcare Reform. Thompson also spoke on insurance exchanges and the payment improvement initiative.
Those in attendance included a large number of physicians, senior leadership members, hospital board members,department heads and nursing staff.
Dr. Thompson is the first person to serve as surgeon general for Arkansas. The surgeon general's position was created by law in 2007, although Thompson has served in a similar capacity since 2005. As surgeon general, he is responsible for identifying strategies and shaping policies to improve the health of Arkansans. Thompson also serves as an associate professor in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Colleges of Medicine and Public Health.
