Fundraising campaign underway to light Cotter bridge

A fund raising campaign to light the R. M. Ruthven Bridge is currently underway by Cotter residents, according to Cotter Mayor Peggy Hammock.   The bridge is among the largest bridges designed by the Marsh Engineering Company, a significant twentieth-century bridge building company, famous for the Marsh Rainbow Arch. It became Arkansas's first National Civil Engineering Landmark in 1986.   Mayor Hammock says the historic bridge across the White River is well known throughout the region.

Among the fund raising efforts to light the bridge has been a dog show held as part of the Bridge Bash festivities held each September in Big Spring Park.

Hammock says about 20 percent of the $49,000 needed to light the bridge has been raised so far.   However, she has recently become aware of a better and more economical way to light the bridge.
