Two citizens contacted by Publisher's Clearing House scammers

At least two individuals in Izard County have been contacted by someone claiming to be from the Publisher's Clearing House stating they had won large sums of money. Izard County Sheriff Tate Lawrence says that this is a scam. The Publishers Clearing House website says they never notify winners by the phone.
The individuals who received the calls say they were asked by the scammers to purchase a gift card in the amount of $500 from a discount store and provide them with the numbers on the card. They also asked the individuals to withdraw $500 from the bank and meet them with the money. The scammers claim the money is to cover travel and other related expenses in delivering them the big win.
Sheriff Lawrence cautions everyone to not be taken by these fraudulent people and never give personal information such as bank account numbers or social security numbers.
