One person was seriously injured this afternoon when a car went over a wall, became airborne and crashed into two helicopters in a fenced compound at the Baxter County Sheriff's Department. The male driver of the vehicle, identified as 71-year old Otis Ivie of Mountain Home, has been transported to Baxter Regional Medical Center. Personnel at Baxter Regional Medical Center say Ivie is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital's emergency room. The accident, which occurred shortly after 3:30, is being investigated by the Arkansas State Police.
Details are sketchy but preliminary information indicates the car, a white, four-door sedan, was traveling westbound on 9th Street and it crossed Highway 62, went over an 8 to 10 foot high embankment and crashed through a chain link fence surrounding the compound at the Baxter County Detention Center.
The car rolled over and landed on its top. The extent of damage to the sheriff department's helicopters is not known at this point. Authorities say one the damaged helicopters are not the primary helicopter used by the sheriff's office. One was used for parts and the other was being reconditioned.
