The 71-year old man who crashed his car into the Aviation Unit area at the Baxter County Sheriff's Department is listed as a patient at Baxter Regional Medical Center Friday morning. Otis Ivie was transported to the hospital Thursday afternoon after the white Cadillac he was driving went over an 8 to 10 foot high retaining wall and crashed into several helicopters inside a fenced compound at the sheriff's department.
The accident which occurred about 3:30 Thursday afternoon is being investigated by Arkansas State Police Corporal Jackie Stinnett. Witnesses at the scene said Ivie's car was westbound on 9th Street and was travelling erratically before he sped through the intersection of 9th Street and Highway 62 West, crossed the highway and went over the retaining wall. It was moving at a high rate of speed, according to witnesses, as it passed near the Town and Country Discount Foods.
Video of the accident taken by cameras outside the Baxter County Sheriff's Department was released Sheriff John Montgomery Thursday. The cameras captured the car going over the retaining wall and smashing into the compound fence and the helicopters.
The car destroyed two helicopters inside the compound. Sheriff Montgomery said one was used strictly for parts and the other was a helicopter that was being reconditioned with plans for it to become the department's primary aircraft. The helicopter presently flown by the sheriff's office was housed in a nearby hangar.
