Courtesy of Thomas DolbyThomas Dolby has a two-CD career retrospective titled Hyperactive that’s coming out July 27, and in support of the release, the ’80s synth-pop star will head out on a brief U.S. summer tour.

The compilation, which is part of the BMG label’s The Masters Collection series, features 28 tracks, including his 1983 top five smash “She Blinded Me with Science” and well-known tracks like “Hyperactive!,” “Europa and the Pirate Twins,” “Radio Silence,” “Dissidents,” “Airhead” and “Airwaves.”

The tour, which is dubbed “An Evening of Music and Storytelling with Thomas Dolby,” is mapped out from a July 25 concert in Los Angeles through an August 8 show in Baltimore. The intimate performances will be multimedia events where Dolby will demonstrate — with a laptop, keyboards and a projection screen — how he created various songs. Thomas also will invite audience members to randomly choose songs from his catalog for him to perform.

“These shows will give me an opportunity to expand on some of the stories in my [2016 memoir, The Speed of Sound] — without pulling any punches!” explains Dolby. “I’ll be un-stitching the songs, as I’ve found audiences love to get a peek ‘under the hood’ and into an artist’s creative methods.”

During the trek, Dolby will take part in a July 27 concert at the Microsoft Theater in L.A. headlined by Blondie and also featuring Adam Ant, Soft Cell‘s Marc Almond and Berlin.

Thomas is currently a music professor at Johns Hopkins University. This fall, he’ll be launching a unique undergraduate course at the school’s Peabody Institute that focuses on music composition and three-dimensional sound design for virtual reality.
