The Rotary Youth Leadership classes are designed for ninth graders selected for the group from MH and Norfork junior high school applicants. It shows them various aspects of our communities, with an eye to possible career paths and the rich variety of resources and opportunities available to area residents. The program hopes to develop leadership skills, community awareness, and a desire to stay in our area as they move out of school and into jobs and family life in the near future. The group visits and is exposed to information and education about such entities in the area as higher education/ASU; health care/BRMC; law enforcement and court system; city and county government; local media and different ways of communicating, such as news, advertising, and music-KTLO/Baxter Bulletin/KPFM; interviewing and resume skills; tourism industry; some of the local businesses with a national and/or international presence; and “Welcome to the Real World”, a basic living-on-your-own skills session that discusses earning capacity, budgeting, check-writing, etc. to demonstrate the value of staying in school to potential earning power, and a little taste of what it’s like to be on your own!
