Nearly a month after a fatality in the North Fork of the White River, Dawt Mill is looking at a solution to increase public safety. On July 20th, the Ozark County resort sent an application to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a permit to remove more than half of the dam adjoining the resort on the river near Tecumseh.

Despite the fact that the dam is privately owned, the federal Clean Water Act says Dawt Mill still needs permission from the Corps before work can begin. Corps of Engineers’ Little Rock District spokesperson Laurie Driver says as of now, the process for considering the application is still in its early stages.

The concerns about the safety of the dam were elevated when 13-year-old Chloe Butcher of Springfield was trying to help another swimmer. She became lodged under the water and drowned in the June 25th incident.
