The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) recently awarded grants to 156 fire departments in the Show Me State, and six are located in Ozark County. According to the Ozark County Times, Lick Creek Valley, Brixey-Rockbridge, Theodosia Area, Tecumseh, Dora and Pontiac/Price Place volunteer fire departments received checks to help pay for equipment.

The grants are part of the MDC’s Volunteer Fire Assistance Matching Grant Program. Over $338,000 worth of grant checks were distributed throughout the state in July and August to reimburse fire departments for the purchases of personal protective gear and firefighting equipment. Funds can be used for chainsaws, hoses, hand tools, radios, communication equipment and other necessities.

To qualify for a grant, a fire department must serve 10,000 people or fewer. Funding is provided by the MDC and the U.S. Forest Service Volunteer Fire Assistance Program.
