Veterans Affairs to start construction on Springfield clinic

The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning to begin construction of a long-awaited clinic in Springfield later this month.

The department said in a news release Wednesday that a groundbreaking for the Gene Taylor Community Outpatient Clinic is planned for Oct. 25.

The announcement came from the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, based in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which oversees operations in southwest Missouri.

The Springfield News-Leader reports that the clinic was once was expected to open in early 2015. Last November, the Veterans Administration estimated the Springfield clinic would open in late 2018 or early 2019.

The Springfield clinic will replace an existing clinic in Mt. Vernon. A second clinic is planned for Joplin.
