Thousands cast ballots early for election in Arkansas

Thousands of Arkansas voters have cast a ballot early for a November election highlighted by the bitter presidential race and a medical marijuana legalization plan that still remains in limbo before the state’s highest court.

The secretary of state’s office said nearly 23,000 people voted by late afternoon Monday, the first day of early voting for the election. Election officials have estimated that potentially 70 percent of the state’s 1.7 million registered voters will cast a ballot in this year’s general election.

The predominantly Republican state has been mostly overlooked in the presidential race. The ballot will include two medical marijuana measures, though the Supreme Court is considering a lawsuit challenging one. If the measure is disqualified, election officials will be ordered to not count any votes cast for it.
