Medical pot group asks Arkansas court to reconsider ruling

The group behind a medical marijuana proposal is asking the Arkansas Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling disqualifying the measure from the ballot days after early voting for the November election began.

Arkansans for Compassionate Care filed a petition for rehearing with the court Monday over its ruling blocking election officials from counting any votes cast for Issue 7, one of two medical marijuana proposals on the ballot. In the 5-2 ruling, justices last week said the campaign didn’t follow state law regarding paid canvassers and tossed out more than 12,000 signatures submitted for it.

The campaign said the court’s ruling infringes on the people’s right to put initiatives on the ballot unless they’re backed by well-financed groups. More than 262,000 people have cast a ballot through early voting.
