FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) – The University of Arkansas at Fayetteville is considering plans to spend $77 million to build two new residence halls on campus to accommodate a rise in enrollment.

Officials say there’s a capacity of 5,732 beds on campus. This fall, the university had just under 5,000 enrolled freshmen, and Chancellor Joe Steinmetz says that makes it difficult for upperclassmen to live on campus.

The chancellor told university trustees Thursday that the two proposed residence halls would add 500 beds to campus. The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the new residence halls would be built on Stadium Drive and would primarily house first- and second-year students.

Steinmetz says the residence halls could be completed by fall 2019 if trustees approve a bond issue next year.
