(AP) – University of Arkansas student leaders are working to
establish a scooter safety program after a 20-year-old student died from a head
injury suffered in a September scooter accident on the Fayetteville campus.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports Cole Pangburn wasn't wearing a helmet
when he lost control of the scooter he was riding on Sept. 2. Pangburn died
several days later.
The university's Student Government Senate voted unanimously Tuesday to pass
the Pangburn Safety Awareness Act of 2016 to emphasize the importance of wearing
a helmet on campus. Details of the legislation will be worked out at a later
date.
Some ideas include using university funds to defray the cost of helmets for
students.
Over 1,300 scooter parking permits have been issued at the campus in the
12-month period ending June 30.
