How Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood's FaceTime Duet Set the Wheels in Motion for Their Tour Down Under

ABC/Paula LoboNow that Carrie Underwood has joined Keith Urban for the Australian leg of his RipCord World Tour, the two finally have a chance to perform their new duet, “The Fighter.” As it happened, Keith and Carrie weren’t even together when they recorded the song. He was clear across the country in California shooting the “Wasted Time” video, and she was in the heartland on the Storyteller Tour.

“She had a day off on tour and she was in St. Louis, Missouri,” Keith recalls. “So she was in the studio, and I was way out there on the set and I was FaceTiming Busbee, who’s the producer and songwriter with me on the song. I was FaceTiming him and Carrie in the studio from the video set. I just went, ‘Guys this is such a 2016 moment right now!’” he laughs.

In the end, it was Keith and Carrie’s collaboration on his RipCord album that set the wheels in motion for the two to hit the road together.

“It was more of a call-and-response song than a traditional, straight-up duet,” Keith says of “The Fighter.” “I love that Carrie loved the song and wanted to do it, and [I’m] thrilled how it turned out. And then the next thing, we talked about maybe touring at some point.”

For his show Saturday in Wellington, New Zealand, Keith donated dozens of tickets to first responders who helped with the November 14 Kaikoura earthquake, to show his appreciation. Tuesday night, Keith and Carrie continue the tour in Adelaide, Australia.
