BELTON, Mo. (AP) – Federal authorities are investigating after a 33-year-old man died when the trench he was working in collapsed at a work site outside Kansas City.

The regional office of the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration said in a release Friday that it’s investigating the death Thursday of the 33-year-old man who was working at a home construction site in Belton when he was caught in the 12-foot trench as it collapsed.

OSHA says preliminary information show the trench did not appear to have been equipped with protective measures to prevent collapse.

The agency says that since January it’s investigated trench collapses that have killed 24 workers.
