Arkansas law enforcement officer shoots, kills man

     (AP) – Arkansas State Police are investigating the Christmas

Day shooting death of a man by law officers in northeast Arkansas.

     Spokesman Bill Sadler says a 33-year-old man was killed Sunday when officers

opened fire after the man shot at them near the unincorporated Desha community

southwest of Batesville.

     No names have been released.

     Sadler says an Independence County deputy encountered the man about 7:25 a.m.

and the man said he was armed, but refused to comply with the deputy’s orders.

     Sadler says other local and state officers went to the scene and about 11 a.m.

the man opened fire, and the officers returned fire, killing the man.

     Sadler said it isn’t known how many officers were at the scene or which one

fired the fatal shot.
