A prosecutor says a sheriff’s deputy in northwest Arkansas was justified when he fatally shot a knife-wielding man outside a tire store last month.

Washington County Prosecuting Attorney Matt Durrett says Cpl. Brad Robinson “had no other choice” apart from using deadly force in the Dec. 21 incident. Authorities say Robinson fatally shot Benjamin Ortiz at Tire Tracks in Fayetteville after Ortiz lunged at Robinson with a knife.

Durrett says he reviewed video of the fatal shooting in making his decision.

The Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports that Robinson has also been cleared after an internal investigation conducted by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
