
Gainesville’s high school basketball teams had mixed results on Thursday. The Lady Bulldogs, currently ranked fifth in Missouri’s Class 2, invoked the mercy rule as they routed Sparta 65-30. The Gainesville boys were not as fortunate as they lost a high-scoring game to Bradleyville by a final of 80-71.
Mammoth Spring was swept by Izard County in three games at Brockwell.
The boys’ game ended with the Cougars winning the 2A/1A-3 district championship as they squeaked by the Bears 61-59 in overtime. Logan Skaggs led Mammoth Spring with 33 points, and Sagen Godwin added 12. For Izard County, Justus Cooper scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Taylor Reynolds had 22 points, and Tanner Brooks chipped in ten points. The Bears fall to 21-8 on the season and 10-4 in district play, and they’ll host Maynard on Tuesday. The Cougars improve to 26-9 and 14-0.
Mammoth Spring’s girls did not fare any better as they were toppled by Izard County 72-35. The Lady Cougars secured a regional tournament berth as they were led by Jen King with 25 points, Kennedy Cooper finished with 19, Sam King ended up with 11, and Kristen Caraway added ten points. Izard County is now 25-5 on the year and 12-2 in the 2A/1A-3.
The evening began with Izard County’s junior boys winning the district title with a 39-34 victory over Mammoth Spring. Caleb Faulkner was the Junior Cougars’ top scorer with 16 points, and Coby Everett chipped in 12. Izard County improves to 17-5 overall and 7-0 in the district.
Mountain Home split a pair of junior high boys’ games at home with Valley Springs.
The freshmen game ended with the Junior Bombers falling to the Junior Tigers 30-21. Wyatt Gilbert led Mountain Home with 11 points. The Junior Bombers drop to 9-9 on the season, and they’ll take on Harrison on Monday.
It was a different result in the seventh grade contest as Mountain Home beat Valley Springs 45-27.
The Mountain Home junior girls had a thrilling win over Valley Springs 42-38 in overtime. Mountain Home’s Kate Gilbert hit a free throw with no time on the clock in regulation to force the extra period.
The Junior Lady Bombers were led by Abby Dietsche with 16 points while Lauren Helmert added 12. The Junior Lady Bombers improve to 11-4 on the season and will travel to Harrison Monday.
A battle between Junior Lady Panthers ended with Norfork getting edged out by Yellville-Summit 38-36. Yellville-Summit was led by Leah Still with 12 points. Yellville-Summit will face Mountain View on Monday as they host the 3A-1 East Conference Tournament.
