(AP) – An Arkansas House panel has rejected an effort to cut
off state funding to colleges and universities that don’t cooperate with federal
immigration authorities.
The House Education Committee on Tuesday rejected by a voice vote Republican
Rep. Brandt Smith’s proposal that would block funding to public higher education
institutions that don’t certify to the state annually that they don’t have a
sanctuary policy in place. No state colleges or universities have adopted such
policies, but Smith said the measure was needed to ensure it doesn’t happen.
Smith said he doesn’t plan to bring the proposal back up during this session.
Opponents of the proposal said it was unnecessary and warned that it could
lead to profiling of some students.
