Arkansas lowering boll weevil assessments for farmers

A foundation set up to help rid Arkansas of boll weevils says it will lower its dues this year from $4 to $3 per acre.
The Arkansas Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation said Friday the drop is due because a loan taken from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency to fight the pest was paid off early.
The foundation and similar programs in other states borrowed money from the FSA to eradicate the boll weevil. Arkansas cotton fields have been weevil free since 2006.
Last year, assessments dropped from $8 per acre to $4 per acre, according to the Arkansas State Plant Board.
