Large crowd turns out for Memorial Day service

That was the sound of the 21-gun salute followed by the playing of Taps at the annual Memorial Day Ceremony held Monday at the Mountain Home Plaza 2000. In addition to the elected officials, military veterans and local citizens, this year’s event was also attended by Arkansas Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin.

Griffin says Memorial Day is a day to single out and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice and didn’t make it back home from the battle.

Advanced Auto Body owner and operator Ron Hayden was the keynote speaker for Monday’s event. In addition to being a Vietnam War veteran, Hayden is also a member of the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and a co-founder of its North Arkansas Transportation System. Hayden said there are a million reasons everyone was gathered at the Plaza 2000.

In 1887, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in honor of all who died in active military service for the United States.

In addition to the guest speakers, patriotic music was provided by the Mountain Home High School Band, North Central Arkansas Veterans Council President Linda Reed served as the master of ceremonies, and George Worford gave the invocation and benediction as he represented the DAV, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 3246 and the Alley-White American Legion Post 52.
