In Thursday’s meeting of the Mountain Home City Council, with seven members present, the council unanimously approved two zoning ordinance changes. An area near Sixteenth Street and Laurel Road was rezoned for a single family housing and condo development.

Tom Embach of Leisure Homes Corporation of Mountain Home is proposing to construct a subdivision of both single family homes and condominiums with age restrictions for those over 55 years of age on approximately 30 acres.

City of Mountain Home Mayor Joe Dillard says a few residents in the area requested to be notified if the zoning changed in any way. Dillard says any major changes would have to go back through the planning commission to start the process over.

The other zoning change request is for 810 Sanford Lane from residential to a commercial development. In both cases, the council suspended the rules and placed the ordinances on the third and final reading, with each receiving unanimous approval.

The council also heard the third reading of two ordinances amending the water and sewer rates for the city. It wasn’t adopted. The ordinances would raise the water rates fourteen cents on the first 2,000 gallons and raise the sewer rates 33 cents. Mayor Dillard says the rates haven’t been raised since 2009. A study was conducted by Garver Engineering recommending an even higher rate by 20 percent. The proposed increase on the table is two percent. Dillard says the rates won’t be considered for approval until the next meeting in order to allow public feedback.

In other council news Mountain Home Fire Chief Ken Williams was recognized for 30 years of service to the city. He was awarded a plaque and tokens. Dillard says he appreciates Chief Williams’ dedication to the city.
