Missouri State junior Jake Burger became the sixth Bear to be selected in the first round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday evening, as the Chicago White Sox nabbed the third baseman with the 11th overall pick.
After helping lead the Bears to a pair of Missouri Valley Conference titles and two NCAA Regional crowns in his three-year career, Burger becomes the Bears’ highest overall draftee since the Washington Nationals selected Ross Detwiler with the sixth overall pick of the 2007 Draft. The No. 11 overall selection is the second-highest for a Missouri State player, trailing only Detwiler.
Last week, Burger became just the third Bear to receive first-team All-America honors from Baseball America. The Chesterfield, Mo., product ranks seventh nationally with 22 home runs. The 2017 MVC Player of the Year, also leads the conference and ranks sixth nationally in runs scored (69), while rating among the nation’s top 25 hitters in total bases (160) and RBIs (65) as well.
