iStock/Thinkstock(ORANGE COUNTY, Calif.) — A twin-engine plane crashed on the 405 Freeway in Orange County, California, on Friday, the FAA has confirmed.
According to the agency, there were two people aboard the Cessna 310, which erupted into flames when it slammed into the highway just short of a runway at John Wayne Airport. The occupants have traumatic injuries, Orange County fire officials told local ABC station KABC-TV.
The plane clipped a single vehicle, according to KABC-TV. The damage to the car was minimal.
The FAA said the pilot declared an emergency shortly after the plane had departed from John Wayne Airport. The plane was trying to return to the airport when the crash occurred, according to the FAA.
A witness told KABC-TV the plane first hit the northbound side of the highway, then “bounced” across the median to the southbound side. The witness said she saw a woman dragging a man from the wreckage.
The freeway has been shut down in both directions, and the airport is closed to arrivals, a John Wayne Airport representative told ABC News.
