A Gainesville man, 51-year-old Richard Rife, remained hospitalized Friday following a two-vehicle accident Thursday in Douglas County. A spokesperson for Cox South Hospital in Springfield says Rife was listed in serious condition. A passenger in his vehicle, 8-year-old Zabe Rife was not listed in the hospital directory although the report indicated he, too, had been transported by ambulance to Cox South.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper A.R. Johnson says the accident occurred at 10:45 Thursday morning on Route JJ in Squires.

The report notes Rife was attempting to avoid a collision with a vehicle driven by 56-year-old Johnny Burkdoll of Squires that had entered an intersection. The impact sent Rife’s truck off the roadway and into an embankment. Rife’s vehicle was listed as totaled, with minor damage reported to Burkdoll’s vehicle. Burkdoll was not injured in the crash.

In a second two-vehicle accident Thursday, three women from Salem were all transported to Cox Hospital where they were treated and released.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Trooper M.L. Cary says the accident occurred at 7:02 Thursday evening on U.S. Highway 60 at Clinton Street in Seymour.

The report notes a vehicle driven by 71-year-old Bonnie L. Smith of Salem failed to yield to a Peterbilt truck driven by 56-year-old Peter L. Dannen of Mansfield, pulling into its path. Dannen’s vehicle then struck the Smith vehicle from the rear. Smith’s vehicle was listed as totaled, while minor damage was reported to Dannen’s vehicle.

Smith, along with two passengers in her vehicle, 72-year-old Sandra K. Glaser and 75-year-old Glenda G. White, were all reportedly treated and released at Cox Hospital.
