The girls, ages 8 and 16, were camping as part of a family reunion when they decided to explore the campgrounds. According to the Beaver County Sheriff’s Office, both got off their ATVs with the family dog when the lightning struck.

The dog returned to the camp to alert the family and then led them to the two girls, who were found unconscious on the ground, according to officials.

The girls were taken to Beaver Valley Hospital by helicopter, the sheriff’s office said, and they were then transported by Life Flight to Primary Children’s Hospital.

The 8-year-old was in critical condition and the 16-year-old was in serious, but stable condition, officials said.
