New medical school in western Arkansas welcomes first class

(AP) – A new medical school has opened its doors in western
Arkansas.The Times Record reports the Arkansas College of Osteopathic Medicine in Fort
Smith began classes Monday.

The school is the first installment of the Arkansas Colleges of Health
Education. The College of Health Sciences is expected to open by 2020.

Arkansas Colleges of Health Education Board Chairman John Taylor says the
country needs more “caring, compassionate physicians who believe that their call
in their life is to serve.”

Arkansas Colleges of Health Education President and CEO Kyle Parker says
nearly 3,900 students applied to the school.

Student Samantha Skinner says she’s ready to help those who are underserved.
She says she was impressed by the community’s support for the school.
