MH, Harrison among top 20 safest cities in Arkansas

The National Council for Home Safety and Security has announced its ranking of the Safest Cities in Arkansas for the 2018 year, and two local cities were among the top 20. Mountain Home just missed the top ten coming in at number 11, and Harrison was ranked 15th.

Bella Vista is ranked number one on the list, followed by Centerton, Bentonville, Cabot, Maumelle, Batesville, Magnolia, Siloam Springs, Malvern, and Rogers has the number ten spot. This report was formally released on January 23.

Safest cities were identified by a review of the most recent FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics, along with the National Council’s population data and internal research. Any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI were removed. Cities with populations under 10,000 were also removed.

Cities who met the criteria were ranked based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) per 1,000 people. These variables were then weighted, with violent crimes assigned a value 1.5 times (due to severity) that of property crimes. Mountain Home had 2.28 violent crimes and 40.15 property crimes per 1,000 people, and Harrison averaged 5.84 violent crimes and 38.47 property crimes.

The National Council for Home Safety and Security is a trade association comprised of home security professionals across the United States. The council advocates for safe communities and home safety with a focus on community involvement.
