The Bakersfield community is mourning the loss of former mayor and city council member 65-year-old Al Gargione. The West Plains Daily Quill reports Gargione died Tuesday evening in West Plains.

Bakersfield City Clerk Shelly Scott says Gargione’s dedication to the town will be missed. She added he spent about 25 years in service to the city as an elected official.

Gargione, born in Los Angeles, lived in Bakersfield for several decades. It is where he married his wife of 45 years, Elma, and, with her, raised their children, Justin Gargione and Jennifer Johnston.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and served with the U.S. Navy. He was a firefighter, emergency medical technician, paramedic and registered nurse.

Gargione worked in the sawmills and ultimately retired from Baxter Healthcare in Mountain Home.

Graveside services for Gargione will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 in Ozark County.
