
An Ozark County man, 37-year-old John Wesley McCullough of Gainesville, has been sentenced to seven years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after he was charged with eight counts of forgery following an incident in which he cleaned out a shed and then the elderly owner’s checkbook. The sentence was handed down earlier this month in Ozark County Circuit Court.
The Ozark County Times reports McCullough’s sentence is pursuant to a long-term drug treatment statute. The seven-year sentence is to run concurrently with an additional probation violation case. He was also ordered to pay $408 in restitution.In July 2017, McCullough pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance.
According to a probable cause statement filed in the case, an 82-year-old woman from Gainesville notified the Ozark County Sheriff’s Office on October 20th some of her checks had been stolen, forged and cashed. During the course of the investigation, deputies confirmed a total of eight checks had been forged and successfully cashed at a Gainesville business. Two of the eight checks had a drivers license number written on the back linked to McCullough.
