LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) _ A corrections official says Arkansas parole and
probation officers’ caseloads can be decreased by not counting offenders who are
considered “inactive” or in jail for a few months.
The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reports the Department of Community Correction’s interim director, Kevin Murphy, told lawmakers Tuesday they should expect to see lower numbers in the next quarterly report. The most recent report shows an average caseload of 147 per officer.
Murphy says one way to lower the caseloads is by only counting offenders
actually being supervised by officers. He says the current caseload report
“includes everyone,” including some who spend three to 90 days in jail.
Murphy hopes to soon develop plans for changes and make recommendations to the
state Office of Personnel Management and Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
