A Newton County man, 37-year-old Matthew McLaurin of Jasper, has been arrested following an altercation in which a mother struck him as he attacked her daughter only to have the daughter strike him when he attacked her mother.

According to the probable cause affidavit, law enforcement responded to a domestic incident Dec. 22nd where a female was observed battered and bruised.

She told the officer McLaurin became aggravated when she went to his residence regarding their relationship. She said the Jasper man started choking her and punched her in the face.

The victim locked herself in a room to call 911. She said McLaurin stole her phone, broke it and threw it in the toilet. He unplugged the home phone to prevent her from calling for help.

She alleges McLaurin said, “I’ll give you something to show the cops.” He then began to strangle her again. He then went outside and reportedly broke the windshield of her vehicle.

The woman’s mother arrived to bring her daughter a charger, observed the victim’s appearance and questioned McLaurin.

McLaurin then allegedly attacked the victim again, with her mother striking him with an extension cord. The Newton County man then directed his attacks on the mother, with the victim striking him in an effort to break up the altercation.

The mother and daughter got in a vehicle to leave, and McLaurin climbed in. The mother struck him with an extension cord, and he reportedly threw a five-gallon gasoline can at her. A deputy found the can behind the vehicle with a broken spout.

The women were able to drive to a neighbor’s house and notify law enforcement.

During an interview at the sheriff’s office, McLaurin told officers the fight began when he found the victim’s methamphetamine and flushed it down the toilet.

McLaurin was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault on a family or household member, as well as three misdemeanor counts.
