An inmate at the Baxter County Detention Center was found dead Wednesday morning, about seven hours after he was booked into the jail. Baxter County Sheriff John Montgomery says 53-year-old Frank Salvadore Compton of Harrison was found unresponsive in his cell at 3:19 Wednesday morning during a routine cell check. Jailers began CPR and an ambulance from Baxter Regional Medical Center was dispatched, but the efforts to revive Compton were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the jail.

According to the sheriff, Compton had been transported to BRMC Tuesday afternoon from an address in Marion County and was released Tuesday evening. Compton was allegedly seen trying to break into some vehicles in the hospital parking lot following his release and was arrested by Mountain Home Police.

Compton was booked into the Baxter County Detention Center at 8:24 Tuesday night on charges of public intoxication and criminal trespassing. He was being held alone in a temporary holding cell.

Compton’s body is being sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. Sheriff Montgomery says, as is customary in this type of situation, the Arkansas State Police will handle the investigation.
