Check out clips of Tom Petty's final interview in trailer for star-studded new documentary, “Echo in the Canyon”

Greenwich EntertainementTom Petty, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Brian Wilson are among the many stars featured in Echo in the Canyon, a new documentary focusing on the influential music scene that developed in Los Angeles’ Laurel Canyon in the mid-to-late 1960s. You can check out a new trailer for the film now on YouTube.

The movie, which premiered last year at a number film festivals, will screen in L.A. on May 24 and New York City on May 31 before receiving a wider release in June. The doc features the final interview ever with Petty, and in the trailer, the late rocker, who moved from Florida to L.A. in the mid-’70s to pursue a career in music, notes, “California was like this legendary paradise.”

Echo in the Canyon also includes conversations with Starr, Clapton, Wilson, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, Jackson Browne, Roger McGuinn, Michelle Phillips and John Sebastian, among many others.

In the film, those artists chat with Bob Dylan’s son, singer/songwriter Jakob Dylan, about the L.A.-area bands who helped create “The California Sound,” including The Beach Boys, The Byrds, The Buffalo Springfield and The Mamas and the Papas.

Jakob also speaks with younger artists, including Beck, Norah Jones, Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor, about how they were inspired by the Laurel Canyon scene.  They’re also are shown performing classic songs from the era in concert.

“The best test of songwriting is that it transcends its moment in time and there is no doubt that the songs we explore in this film are as powerful today as they were in 1965,” says Jakob, who also executive-produced the film.
