Courtesy of The CommodoresThe Commodores recently received special honors from two Alabama cities: their hometown of Tuskegee, and Montgomery.
Tuskegee declared Friday, March 29, to be Commodores Day, while Montgomery named the members of the veteran R&B/funk act — Walter “Clyde” Orange, James Dean “JD” Nicholas and William “WAK” King — as honorary residents and presented them with the keys to the city.
To mark the honors, a celebration was held at the Commodore Museum, located at the site of the group’s former rehearsal and recording studio in Tuskegee. The band, which formerly featured Lionel Richie on lead vocals, was formed at the Tuskegee Institute more than 50 years ago.
“It is really great to see the place where the group was born!” The Commodores said in a statement. “It still feels like home 50 years later, to the point where we didn’t want to leave!”
The band currently has nine U.S. dates on its concert schedule, including a joint show with The O’Jays on August 25 in San Diego.
