Credit: Daryl HannahNeil Young is back in the saddle with his old backing group, Crazy Horse.
The folk-rock legend revealed in a message posted on his Neil Young Archives website on Tuesday that he and the band are about to start working on a new studio album somewhere “high in the Rockies.”
“At least 11 new songs, all written recently, are going to be recorded starting this week,” wrote Young, adding that the new album, a follow-up to 2012’s Psychedelic Pill, “should be released in 2019.”
Longtime E Street Band member Nils Lofgren, who played with Crazy Horse in the early 1970s and began doing shows with the group again last year, is also a part of the sessions, as are founding bassist Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina. Neil confirmed that guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro, who joined Crazy Horse in 1975, exited the band in 2018.
Regarding the new project, Neil said, “The Band is excited to make this new album and continue our story. We sincerely hope you enjoy our new music when it is released this year because we know we will enjoy making it. We are very excited to get started in just a few days!”
Meanwhile, Young also recently revealed that he’s considering putting together a compilation called Greatest Misses that will feature “studio tracks, finished records that did not become part of an album, yet are really cool records.”
He also notes that he has 10 to 15 unreleased albums that are either “‘in the can’ or under construction” that he plans to review to decide whether he will put them out.
