Even though it’s only been out a little more than a week, Blake Shelton already has a top-thirty hit with “God’s Country.”

Devin Dawson — who co-wrote the lead single, appearing on Blake’s next record — says the song itself came together just as quickly as it hit the chart.

“I wrote the song with Michael Hardy,” Devin explains. “He is just such a force of nature. He’s so incredible. We wrote it on Thursday, Blake heard it that weekend somehow, and he recorded it that Monday.”

“It was just kind of one of these freak things that doesn’t usually happen like that, you know?” he adds.

While Devin agrees the “God’s Country” lyrics are open to each listener’s interpretation, he believes it’s the song’s universal theme that’s made it such an instant hit.

“I think it’s just a song that we can all relate to,” he points out, “like whether it’s where you’re standing or where you grew up, or where you live now, like we all know what ‘God’s country’ is to us, you know. And I think that’s what Blake heard in it.”

In addition to co-writing “God’s Country,” Devin also contributes background vocals to the tune.

Later this month, Devin kicks off his California Smoke Tour, playing shows in his home state to help victims of the California wildfires.
