Taylor Hill / ContributorWestern StarsBruce Springsteen‘s first new studio album in five years, will be out June 14, and just after midnight ET on Thursday, he released the first track, along with a lyric video, called “Hello Sunshine.”

In a statement on Thursday, Bruce described the album as a throwback to his solo recordings, featuring “character-driven songs and sweeping, cinematic orchestral arrangements,” and “Hello Sunshine,” with its lazy shuffle, moaning steel guitar and lush strings, delivers on that promise.

The project, recorded mostly at his home studio in New Jersey, as well as in New York and California, was inspired by the Southern California pop records of the 1960s and ’70s, Springsteen said in an interview a while back.

Springsteen doesn’t appear in the video, which simply shows an old car with New Jersey plates traveling on a deserted highway.

Western Stars is available for pre-order on Friday.
