Abstract Stones I, courtesy of Ronnie Wood; John MossBesides wielding a mean guitar, The Rolling Stones‘ Ronnie Wood also is an accomplished artist. The 71-year-old Rock & Roll Hall of Famer has just released some limited-edition prints of a series of new paintings he created that were inspired by his famous band and some of its vintage tour posters.
Wood’s new Rolling Stones paintings are titled “Abstract Stones,” which depict the band onstage and, as Ronnie explains, are his interpretation of Pablo Picasso‘s “The Three Dancers.”
“I call it The Picasso Stones,” Wood explains. “Looking at [Picasso’s] original, I was inspired to do my own take featuring the boys. I did a few versions and each one was slightly different and more honed than the last. I had great fun doing it.”
He adds, “I hope and think [Picasso would] be flattered, but also a bit shocked and pleasantly surprised at my take on his work.”
Interestingly, one of Ronnie’s “Abstract Stones” paintings appears to depict Mick Jagger with female breasts.
The other new prints are of paintings Wood did depicting posters that promoted The Stones’ Bridges to Babylon Tour of 1997 and ’98, Urban Jungle Tour of 1990 and Voodoo Lounge Tour of 1995.
