A Baxter County teenager has done something while studying with a tutor from the Twin Lakes Literacy Council not many students have done. Lucas Sutton has completed all 12 levels of the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling Curriculum. The last two levels of the program concentrate on foreign language words in the English language.
Lucas’ mom Mandy wanted to get help for her son’s reading problems and heard about the Twin Lakes Literacy Council on KTLO-FM’s Talk of the Town program. Sutton started working with his tutor Anna Marie Eitenmiller about four and a half years ago. The two would meet two days a week at Benny’s Country Store on Highway 5 South, because it was closer for them than driving to Mountain Home.
Eitenmiller says the Barton curriculum was perfect in helping Sutton overcome his problems.
Sutton says the aid he has received from the sessions have helped him tremendously.
Sutton will have his diploma from finishing the program and his picture displayed at the Susan Barton headquarters in California for completing the course.
Eitenmiller says reading and spelling are just a few of the subjects being taught through the Twin Lakes Literacy Council.
Sutton encourages those with problem learning to contact the Twin Lakes Literacy Council, even if they are apprehensive like Sutton was.
Sutton will be among the speakers at this year’s Twin Lakes Literacy Council annual luncheon May 3rd, something he says he could never have done four and a half years ago.
Lucas is the son of John and Mandy Sutton of Salesville.
